A considerable amount of electricity can be produced form yet untapped source the Vehicle
Induced Wind Gust produced due to the moving vehicles on the highways. Highways provide a large amount
of wind produced by the fast moving vehicles to run a turbine. The energy thus produced can be utilized for
the generation of electrical energy with the help of vertical axis wind turbines. This project aims to extract
this energy in the most efficient manner. Vertical axis wind turbine can be installed on the median of the
roads so that the wind from both sides of the median will act tangentially in opposite direction on both sides
of the turbine thereby increasing effective wind speed acting on the turbine. This wind flow will depend on
the velocity of the vehicle, size of the vehicle and intensity of the traffic. So a detailed survey has to be done
for studying these distributions. Based on the studies made an optimal wind turbine design has to be made.
The wind power harnessed through this technique can be used for street lighting, traffic signal lighting, toll
gates etc. Thus a new source of electrical energy will light up the highways. Though the energy produced is
useful, the electricity generated by this method is not enough to run the street lighting and traffic lights for
the whole day. To overcome this solar power is utilized along with VIWG for more energy. The electricity
generated will be stored in battery storages and utilized . The excess generated energy will be given to the
grid. Also from the detailed survey done it is clear that vehicle traffic is high during night time, hence the
energy crisis during the day time will be solved by using the solar electric generation system. Thus a new
renewable energy can light up the whole highways.
