INVESTIGATION OF FDM PRODUCED PLA–GRAPHENE COMPOSITE FOR AIRCRAFT APPLICATIONS
Abstract
Additive manufacturing technology is increasingly being utilized in the field of aerospace engineering due to the production of lightweight and complex structures using minimum wastage of raw material. In this work, the synthesis of polylactic acid-based polymer reinforced with graphene particles using fused deposition modeling has been analyzed. Graphene has been added to the polylactic acid (PLA) to improve the strength and thermal properties of this material. Composites in filament form have been made by melt mixing of graphene with PLA, followed by FDM. Mechanical properties of this composite have been evaluated via tensile, flexural, compressive, and impact tests according to the standards set by ASTM. Experimental data show that this composite exhibit excellent mechanical properties compared with the neat PLA material. It can be stated that PLA-graphene composites have great potential for application in aerospace engineering due to their lightweight and affordable nature.
