A SURVEY ON CLASSIFICATION TECHNIQUES FOR PAP SMEAR SCREENING IN CERVICAL CANCER DIAGNOSIS

Abstract

Cervical cancer is the commonest cancer cause of death among women in developing countries. Multi factorial causation, potential for prevention, and the sheer threat it poses make cervical cancer an important disease for in-depth studies. It is preventable through a simple screening test, the so-called PAP-smear. This is the most effective cancer prevention measure developed so far. But the visual examination of the smears is time consuming and expensive and there have been numerous attempts at automating the analysis ever since the test was introduced more than 60 years ago. This paper gives a survey and an overview of the state of the art and currently available literature and techniques related to Pap smear image analysis. Some techniques are used to detect cell components such as nuclei and cell boundaries. Other segmentation techniques are designed to use in single cell or clustered cell images. Many schemes are proposed for cell classification. The common aim of all these techniques is to develop an automated Pap smear analysis system which can help cyto technician in reducing the time spent for slide examination in Pap screening process and save lives.
