PERFORMANCE AND COMBUSTION CHARACTERISTICS OF LEMON GRASS BIO-DIESEL IN HOMOGENOUS CHARGED COMPRESSION IGNITION ENGINE

Abstract

Abstract— This project is to understand and investigate the fuel atomisation and vaporisation on a commercial available bio-fuel in vehicles to study the combustion effluents, efficiency and performance of the engines using lemon grass as bio fuel. This system works similar to conventional fuel injection engines but with minor modifications, the bio fuel is vaporised before entering into the manifold via heating element. The heating element comprises of a copper tube a nichrome wire and an insulating chamber were the arrangement of the setup is in form of a tube on which the coil is wound over and placed inside an insulating element. The injection is done by a low pressure injector operating at pressures of 1-2 bar. The charge is then compressed, which raises to auto ignition causing serious of spontaneous combustion, relatively called the HCCI mode .
