DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF EN 19 STEEL, EN 351 AND EN 41 B (NITRIDE STEEL) FOR DIESEL ENGINE 1523 CAMSHAFT

Abstract

The camshaft used in piston engines to operate popper valves. The diesel engine 1523 camshaft are generally made by EN 19 (carbon steel) Steel material. However, EN 19steel material has low wear resistance and its service life is shorter. In camshaft, particularly lobes suffer wear over time to a point where valve lift is reduced and engine performance is degraded. Also it necessitates frequent replacement leading to loss of time and money. In this project we are analyzing and comparing mechanical properties of EN 41 B (Nitride steel) over EN 19 & EN 351 (Alloy steel) steel.
