GRAMMAR AND LANGUAGE TEACHING
Abstract
This paper aims to focus on the effective teaching of grammar. Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of languages. It is also one of the most difficult aspects of language to educate the students. Many people, including language teachers, hear the word "grammar" and think of a fixed set of word forms and rules of usage. They associate "good" grammar with the prestige forms of the language, such as writing and formal oral presentations. Language teachers focus on grammar as a set of forms and rules. They teach grammar by explaining the forms and rules and then drilling students on them. The bored and disaffected students consistently make errors when they try to use the language in context. While learning a second language through mother tongue, the children acquire their second language like English easily and able to understand it. The students will absorb grammar rules as they hear, read, and use the language in communication activities. It aims to stimulate students' imagination, humour and creativity and increase the effectiveness of grammar practice. Traditional drill and practice will be the most meaningful to students when they are anchored in the context of writing assignments or the study of literary models. Students find grammar most interesting when they apply it to authentic texts. Learners can use of different kinds of texts such as newspapers, magazines, articles as sources for grammar examples and exercises. This approach helps them to make grammar relevant and alive. As grammar, in language studies, makes it possible for us to talk about language and helps students to acquire the language more efficiently. The main paper focuses on the effective grammar teaching and learning of English. The language teachers use various methods including traditional and modern teaching pedagogy.
