EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON HARDENED & DURABILITY PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE WITH SEAWATER

Abstract

Generally 50 percentage of world’s population are facing water scarcity. In order to keep safe our drinking water, use of seawater in concrete mixture becomes plausible in the future. The importance of seawater as mixing water of concrete was tested based on literature review and experimental based studies. The slump cone test is conducted to evaluate the workability of fresh concrete. The main aim is to determine the mechanical and durability properties. In this paper the compressive strength, split tensile strength, young’s modulus, flexural strength, sorptivity and acid tests are conducted in the hardened concrete at the age of 28 days and 56 days. The two mixes are mixing with two different PH values of seawater and curing with freshwater. The other two mixes are mixing with freshwater and curing with two different PH values of seawater. The M3 (mixing with fresh water and curing with Chennai seawater) mix obtained more strength compared with other mix proportions.
